    Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan taught:

“We can and must fight anti-Semitism.
    But how?

    First we must educate ourselves,
    through books, through interviews,
and through friendly talks with our
    neighbors, whether Jewish or Christian.

    We must understand the reasons
    for bigotry, wherever it appears.

We must always be ready to speak
up for our people, armed with
    the confidence of knowledge.”

  2. Jonathan S. Tobin said:

“As our Evelyn Gordon wrote in a prescient COMMENTARY [magazine] article published in January 2010, by signaling its willingness to withdraw from some territory, the Israelis did not convince anyone of their good intentions.

To the contrary, such concessions reinforced the conviction that Israel was a thief in possession of stolen property.

The reaction from the Palestinians and hostile Europeans was not gratitude for the generosity of the Israelis in giving up land to which they too had a claim, but a demand that it be forced to give up even more.

Land-for-peace schemes and a belief in two states on the part of Israelis has always led most Palestinians to believe that their goal of forcing the Jews out of the entire country was more realistic, not less so.”

  5. Another way to avoid Israeli brutality is to stay away from news media promoting Arab war propaganda as news. If you don't hear about it, you won't know about it, which is a good thing because most of the reportage is pure bullshit.

    1. I think people are struggling with a few things. There have always been massacres and mass shootings. At least in my experience. But it's i think a newer thing to the experience of the first world West. It's certainly seeing a resurgence. But we once understood these things as either political acts or something in the context of a civil war. For some reason that makes more sense to people, almost comforting. Why else would there be MORE people killed by mass shootings in France in 2015-2016 than the US and almost no overt calls to upend their own civil rights? Because it's from a 'cause. It makes perverted sense. This sort of thing here is not, does not. This society doesn't understand it so it lashes out with utmost measures. Not even the Pulse shooting which killed 3x the people drive this much outrage. That we were told, was for a reason. A sick reason but still a reason.

  6. Today I was reading an editorial in a local Canadian newspaper:
Students Teach Their Elders. It was about how youth are now the adults in the room on gun control. I was shocked to learn that kids know more about this complex subject than the founders and generations of lawmakers.

Don't get me wrong. I favour sensible gun control measures. But I just can't get behind this latest propagandist meme. Unfortunately, as a teacher Ive known way too many kids over the years to buy it. As one toon put it, last week they were eating Tide pods; this week they are experts on gun control.

    1. College kids know more than just about anybody (except maybe actors and Roger Waters), because they're so worldly having spent the bulk of their lives as children. For example, they are much more intelligent and worldly than people who were once college students who also knew everything and have now experienced life in the real world and have reflected on their knowledge and experiences. That's why political propagandists show up at schools to indoctrinate youth, i.e., because those kids are super experienced geniuses. They know things.
